C4 Rice Wiki

This is a Wiki project site for the C4 Rice Consortium. C4 is the technical acronym for "four carbon" based photosynthesis. Plant species which function as C4 plants generally have higher biomass yield per solar radiation input, higher water and nitrogen use efficiency and better tolerance to heat stress, hence, generally more tolerant to drought stressed, marginal environments, such as found in many rainfed rice growing environments which are host to many poor, subsistence farming communities.

Most plants, including rice, are so-called C3 photosynthetic systems, which don't generally have these advantages. The goal of this Consortium is, in fact, to introduce C4 photosynthesis into rice. If successfully created, a C4 rice may have up to 50% increased grain yield plus all the aforementioned agronomic advantages.
